In exceptionally general terms, there are three main game plans employed. You need to be agile enough to switch strategies instantly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This consists of building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to lock in the opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious dire straits taking into account that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!
The Backgame
This course of action is where you have two or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor spot is a position filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your opposer is getting their checkers home, because you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this case, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
