Backgammon – Three Basic Techniques

In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 general plans used. You must be able to hop between techniques almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious dire straits since they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It would be used when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest places for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, considering that you don’t have any other extra pieces to move! In this situation, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this case!
