In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 chief tactics used. You want to be able to hop between game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is comprised of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you might manage, to lock in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.
The Blitz
This consists of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is now in serious calamity due to the fact that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!
The Backgame
This strategy is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your opportunities. The best places for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, considering that you do not have other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
